Democracy Counts Inc. is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization behind America Counts, Wanna Vote, and the Middle Majority Movement. It is the legal entity, the tax-exempt home, and the governance structure that makes the rest of this work possible.
What Democracy Counts does
Democracy Counts doesn’t run its own public-facing programs. It exists so that its initiatives can operate with institutional credibility, legal protection, and structural nonpartisanship — things that are difficult for informal projects to maintain as they grow.
Specifically, Democracy Counts provides shared infrastructure across three initiatives: America Counts — independent election auditing. Volunteers record poll tapes on election night; we compare them to official results and publish the findings.
Wanna Vote — voter suppression documentation. Trained canvassers collect encrypted, individually verifiable records from voters who were prevented from casting ballots.
Middle Majority Movement — civic primary mobilization. Local chapters of civic organizations coordinate to bring the moderate majority to primary elections where candidates are actually chosen.
Why it’s a 501(c)(3)
The nonprofit structure isn’t incidental — it’s load-bearing. Democracy Counts was founded in 2016 in San Diego, California, and its founding documents embed nonpartisanship as a legal requirement, not merely a value statement. That matters because the work touches elections, and any organization that touches elections will be accused of partisan motivation. The 501(c)(3) structure constrains what Democracy Counts can do in ways that make the accusations harder to sustain.

A donation to Democracy Counts funds the shared infrastructure — engineering, legal review, security auditing, canvasser training, and organizational operations — that all three initiatives depend on.
